Bring on the RACKet!
As a writer, I love a cleverly worded phrase, title, or acronym. I recently found the acronym “RACK” which stands for Random Acts of Christmas Kindness. Since RACK has both a Facebook and Pinterest account, you know it’s official. Well, I officially love it ─ both the acronym and the challenge to complete “mini-mission” deeds. Family members can individually or collectively spread a little holiday cheer to others (and within themselves) by executing RACK. Compile a list of caring tasks and choose a seasonal schedule for daily implementation, such as the advent calendar, the Twelve Days of Christmas, or through the New Year.
Here are a few suggestions to create some seasonal RACKet:
- Pay for someone’s coffee or meal at a drive-through.
- Deliver a hot chocolate to a Salvation Army bell ringer.
- Give a lottery ticket to a stranger.
- Donate new or used books to the library/school.
- Send a care package to someone serving overseas.
- Leave change in the vending machine or newspaper rack.
- Provide a blanket & toiletries to a homeless person.
- Bring Lifesaver candies to the fire station.
- Rake your neighbor’s yard or return their trash bins from the curb.
- Donate your vacation days to another employee in need (if permitted by human resources).
- Offer a bottle of water or snack to your household service workers (lawn maintenance, exterminator, pool tech, etc.).
- Extend compliments & gratitude to colleagues, family, and friends!
Scientific research suggests that kindness actually changes the brain, impacts the heart and immune system, and may be an antidote to depression. Plus, teaching kindness in the home can instill important qualities within your child, like compassion and bravery. Author Henry James said, “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” You already have enough holiday-induced stress from planning festive feasts and parties to completing your shopping list on budget. So, don’t fret over whether Santa will add you to his Naughty or Nice List. Earn your way, and your family’s way, onto his Nice List with Random Acts of Christmas Kindness!
