Spotlighting exceptional students, student athletes, educators and all-around boons to Greater Orlando
Star Educator: Andrew Moon
Orlando Science School teacher Andrew Moon received high honors from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) with the Edyth May Sliffe Award. Moon was one of only 20 recipients selected for this achievement, and his candidacy comes in part from his ability to inspire and foster interest in his students in mathematics.
Star Student: Tierney Diedrich
A Southwest Middle School student, Tierney Diedrich is on the honor roll with a 4.0 GPA and has been a member of student council for the past three years. She is also a medal-winning gymnast and is slated to volunteer at the Special Olympics this fall. When she is not practicing, Tierney spends her time helping younger aspiring gymnasts at the training center.
Star coach: Heather Green
Lake Nona High School head volleyball coach Heather Green took her ladies to regional finals for the third consecutive year, all while garnering her third straight award for the East Metro Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year. Green, who has just reached 10 years of service, continues to mentor her girls on and off the court.
Star Student: Miguel Soto
Florida Virtual High School junior Miguel Soto received an exclusive offer to play in the Florida Diamond Club showcase, an invitation-only baseball championship event. He also holds a 4.3 GPA and upon graduation, Soto will be committed to play for the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
Star Educator: Vanessa Conser
Thornbrook Elementary School kindergarten teacher Vanessa Conser is a nominee for teacher of the year, and has just completed nine years of service. A leader in shaping our local children, Conser receives several visits from prior students who all say the same thing; her love, teaching method and positive approach have influenced them for the better.
Star Student: Jacob James
At only 6 years old, Jacob James has wasted no time making a name for himself as one of the youngest golf sensations in Greater Orlando. He is currently ranked 11th in the state in his age group, and he finished in first place at the Jacksonville U.S. Kids Summer Tour. This achievement guarantees him a spot at the U.S. Kids World Championship at Pinehurst next fall.
