Put Your Best Face Forward

When it comes to dealing with adolescent acne, the experts at Associates in Dermatology take an individualistic approach to provide the proper treatment.

There’s a lot about adolescence that can weigh on a teenager’s everyday existence, but one of the biggest growing pains is dealing with acne-prone skin. These unwanted blemishes can cause undue stress and a lack of self-confidence that can only further complicate those coming of age.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Because the skin is the largest organ in the body, it takes a proper understanding on how to correctly care for it. And thanks to exciting advancements in technology and treatment protocols, there’s never been more ways to tackle the dermatologic disease that affects as many as 50 million people across the United States.

In Central Florida, that high level of expert care can be found close by. Associates of Dermatology, under the guidance of Michael Steppie, dermatologist, was established more than 30 years ago and has grown to 16 locations, including Celebration, Dr. Phillips, Hunter’s Creek and Ocoee.

And while there are plenty of flashy advertisements on television and in magazines for “quick-fix” products, Dr. Steppie warns that it can be difficult to eliminate acne on your own and says there is no substitution for expert care.

“You should avoid being influenced by highly advertised brands,” Dr. Steppie says. “Seek professional advice at a dermatology practice with skincare specialists for a personalized treatment plan.

“If you have concerns about caring for your skin, you should make an appointment to see one of our dermatology providers. Severe cases of acne can extend deep into the skin and may leave unsightly scars unless treated correctly.”

This early onset of the disease tends to impact young men more than young women, and while stress alone is not the sole cause of acne, there is strong evidence to suggest that it can trigger breakouts or make them slower to heal. In fact, a recent worldwide survey of dermatologists suggested that stress was the second-leading cause of acne behind hormonal imbalances.

Dr. Steppie and his highly skilled team take a calculated approach to identifying the problem and making sure treatment is focused on the individual, rather than a one-size-fits-all diagnosis.

“At our practice, acne is assessed for type and graded in severity before a treatment regimen is recommended as there are many different treatments available for all types of acne,” says Dr. Steppie.

There are different modalities and combinations of treatment options including topical creams and lotions. Several new oral medications are also available and even some new formulations that deliver the medication in a foam vehicle directly to the skin which can be used on children as young as 9 years old.

Despite all these breakthroughs, one should not expect an overnight turnaround or be discouraged if an initial treatment does not produce noticeable results.

“It can take two to three months to see improvements in acne after starting treatment,” says Dr. Steppie. “And each person is different, so if no improvement is seen from one treatment, there are a multitude of different options that can be tried.”

One of the most important things with regard to acne, whether the blemishes appear on your face, back or other areas of the body, is to avoid trying to pick or pop the pimples. That can worsen the condition and also cause further scarring. It’s just one of the common mistakes often made by acne sufferers. Other counterproductive approaches include excessive washing of the skin and irregular skin care routines.

With Dr. Steppie’s extensive dermatologic expertise, patients will become educated on the best skincare methods that can have a direct effect on reducing future breakouts.

“Patients learn the best way to cleanse and take care of his or her skin as well as have an opportunity to discuss how such skin disorders affect their mood, energy level and desire to socialize or participate in their favorite activities,” says Dr. Steppie.

So while acne can be troublesome for teenagers and adults, seeking professional assistance can help eliminate some of the frustration and angst.

“Our Orlando dermatology practices have helped countless patients pinpoint the causes of their acne, clear their skin and retain their confidence,” Dr. Steppie says.

In addition to acne treatment, Associates in Dermatology also has a team of specialists ready to assist in all areas of the field, from clinical concerns to cosmetic options. No matter what your skincare needs, expect to find a knowledgeable and friendly staff ready to assist you in a welcoming setting.

“We would love to see you at one of our 16 convenient locations to take a close look at your specific needs, including acne treatment,” says Dr. Steppie.

Our offices remain OPEN as we are an essential healthcare provider during COVID-19 outbreak.
