Five species of sea turtles call the waters and beaches of Florida home. While state statutes protect sea turtles, despite baring a hard shell these beautiful creatures sometimes require a little TLC. The Marine Science Center, located in Volusia County, is dedicated to the rehabilitation of sea turtles, seabirds, and other native wildlife critters. Visitors to the Marine Science Center, open Tuesday through Sunday, can witness the care of sea turtles, other reptile species, and a wide variety bird species!

In addition to experiencing regular programs and demonstrations, residents are invited to celebrate the Marine Science Center’s Turtle Day on Saturday, April, 27th. This event begins at 10am and culminates at 3pm with a beachside animal release to return rehabilitated sea turtles and seabirds back to their natural environment. Just a short walk from the facility, the animals will hit the sand or sky from the Beach Street ramp in Ponce Inlet.

Festivities include a wide range of artists, crafters, partnering community organizations, face painting, live music, food vendors, and tons of educational opportunities led by wildlife experts. The Marine Science Center has housed and rehabilitated close to 20,000 animals! And on Turtle Day, some of these now healthy sea turtles and seabirds, including gulls and pelicans, are likely to once again enjoy their natural habitat. So, is the saying “as slow as a turtle” true? Head to the Marine Science Center and the beaches of Ponce Inlet to see for yourself!

The admission into the Marine Science Center is: $5 adults, $4 seniors (age 50+), $2 children (age 3-12), and free for kids under age 3. Open 10am to 4pm, Tuesdays – Saturdays; noon to 4pm, Sundays; and closed Mondays. For more information, call (386) 304-5545.
