Colorful Design Trends by HGTV’s David Bromstad
Original winner of HGTV Design Star and host to HGTV Color Splash, David Bromstad mastered his creative craft in Florida! After graduating from the Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, he launched his career right here in Orlando at Walt Disney World.
David shares his advice with Orlando Family Magazine on the hottest design trends:
How can a homeowner jazz up a neutral color palette?
Add color accents with area rugs, lamps, shades, throws, throw pillows, floor pillows, art, and accessories. These pieces are the easiest and most inexpensive options to spice up any room. Don’t be afraid to try the bold pattern that you always wanted but thought wouldn’t work. Just save your receipts and if you are not satisfied with the look, try something else.
I keep the walls in my home neutral in tone with a palette of black, white, and red with pops of color. I love to add unique pieces to impact the overall look. One of my favorite things is my gorgeous red crystal chandelier ─ it makes a huge pop!
What are the top home design trends for 2013?
Kitchen/Dining:
- Islands: People spend more and more time in their kitchen; so oversized islands are becoming the main dining table.
- Luxury appliances: Exhaust hoods that are more like pieces of art than a hood are all the rage. Large commercial style ranges, ovens, and refrigerators are being made by many different brands (not just high-end companies), and, therefore, luxury appliances are becoming more affordable to the public.
- Asian: If you thought that the Asian-inspired design had gone away, think again! Asian-influenced kitchens and baths continue to be reinvented.
- Lighting: Dramatic looks!
Outdoor: Bringing the indoors out is trending. Homeowners are investing resources to transform their yards into living sanctuaries that include outdoor kitchens, living rooms, and even bathrooms. This trend will continue to push design limits.
Modern Twists: It’s all about incorporating patterns from different eras and updating them into the modern day. I love the many shades of gray and consider these hues to be the “new beige.”
What are the top trends for kid’s rooms?
Parents are spending more time and money on their kid’s rooms with fun and functionality in mind. Areas for kids to play and to study remain on trend. Some designs are now miniature versions of the parent’s living spaces, inclusive of small living room quarters and couches. This may sound expensive, but you can do it on a budget with a little research!
