Family Fun During Winter Break

You can count on Orlando Family Magazine to find all sorts of holiday happenings – see a complete listing of seasonal activities on page 26 of the December issue. But, after all the presents are unwrapped, Christmas cookies are eaten, and festive chaos has settled, you might discover that playing with newly gifted toys can only go so far in keeping your kiddos entertained. Enjoy the remainder of winter break by exploring these ideas before the kids head back to school.

  • Visit snow cows. Thousands of manatees migrate to Florida seeking warmer waters during winter. Discover these mellow giants in their natural habitat at Blue Spring State Park or at other area locations (SaveTheManatee.org).
  • Hit the ice. Learn where to experience the cool, classic pastime of ice skating on page 12 of the December issue!
  • Play in the snow. Don’t head north to make snow angels… just drive south on I-4 to Celebration to soak up Now Snowing, the town’s nightly snowfall (CelebrationTownCenter.com).
  • Watch a live sporting event. The Orlando City soccer season may have wrapped but basketball and hockey games are in full swing, so cheer on our Orlando Magic (NBA.com/Magic) and Orlando Solar Bears (OrlandoSolarBearsHockey.com)!
  • Lights, camera, action. Each year, my family hops in the car to view holiday light displays as we sip hot chocolate and egg nog. Follow suit and chat about which homes nailed the decorating task.
  • Winter cleaning. Kids may dread cleaning (who doesn’t?) but they can help make room for what Santa delivers by cleaning out old toys and clothes. Use the items for a yard sale or donate to a charity.
  • Allow screen time. Mix up movie going by catching classic holiday film showings. Consider picnic style viewing at Leu Gardens or dinner theatre seating at the Enzian.
  • Hit a high point. Head to Clermont to climb the Citrus Tower, lit up like a 22-story Christmas tree throughout December, and view Central Florida from one of its highest points.
  • March into the New Year. Catch the televised Florida Citrus Parade in person, which features signature floats made of citrus fruit, spirited marching bands, and exciting performances.
