Newspapers, Soda Cans, Water Bottles…and Athletic Shoes?
Recycle by Repurposing the Sneaks
Recycling sneakers might sound a little out-there, but it wasn’t so long ago that tossing yesterday’s news into the trash was the norm. Today, recycling everything from plastic, glass, and cartons, to cardboard, paper and electronics has become second nature for many people around the world. So, why not add old sneakers to the list?
Wait ‘til you hear what Nike does with these old shoes… The outsole is used for track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles, playground surfacing, and even new Nike products. The shoe’s midsole is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts. The shoe’s upper fabric is used in the creation of cushioning pads for indoor synthetic and wood courts.
So the next time you rummage through your household closets and discover an old, worn-out pair of sneakers, don’t just toss your kicks in the trash. Instead, head over to one of Nike’s local collection locations and give your tired old shoes to a company that wants to recycle their components for another use.
