Orlando Family Stars
Each month, Stars features exceptional students, student-athletes, educators and all-around boons to the Greater Orlando area.
Dylan Crews
Crews, a 2020 graduate of Lake Mary High School, was chosen by the Washington Nationals with the second overall selection in the Major League Baseball Draft. An outfielder, Crews won the 2023 Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States, after hitting .426 with 18 home runs and 71 walks this season. He and LSU pitcher Paul Skenes, who was selected first by the Pittsburgh Pirates, made history by becoming the first teammates ever drafted first and second overall. Together, they helped the Tigers win the seventh national championship in program history.
Taylor Stuhl
Stuhl, a 2006 Bishop Moore Catholic High School graduate, joined the Navy 12 years ago and today serves as an electronics technician (navigation) aboard USS Alaska. Submariners make up only 10% of the Navy’s personnel, but they play a critical role in carrying out one of the Defense Department’s most important missions: strategic deterrence. Chief Petty Officer Stuhl is one of the sailors continuing a 123-year tradition of service under the sea to help ensure Americans’ safety. Known as America’s “Apex Predators,” the Navy’s submarine force operates a large fleet of technically advanced vessels. These submarines are capable of conducting rapid defensive and offensive operations around the world, in furtherance of U.S. national security.
Core & Main
The IT division of Core & Main, a national distributor of water, wastewater, storm drainage and fire protection products, recently came together in Orlando to put a smile on the faces of children in the foster care system. The team raised funds to purchase 18 new bikes, then assembled them during their annual convention at Grand Bonnet Creek. The bikes, and acco mpanying helmets, were delivered to the Embrace Families West Orange Service Center. This donation was made possible by Core & Main CIO and Embrace Families board member Carrie Busbee, who worked closely with Embrace Families Director of Community Engagement Morgan Donovan and West Orange Executive Director Nikki Riggsbee to coordinate the delivery and distribution of bicycles.
