Spotlighting exceptional students, student athletes, educators and all-around boons to Greater Orlando

Jaelen Alexander
Orlando Science School junior Jaelen Alexander was recently honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his volunteer work with the City of Orlando. Over the past five years, Alexander has worked alongside elected officials and has completed more than 500 hours of service to date.

Sara Bartlett
An International Baccalaureate student, Sara Bartlett has been selected as Winter Park High School’s 2017 recipient of the Disney Dreamer and Doer Award. Bartlett, who’s also her class valedictorian, spent eight days organizing a market-bag micro-industry in Picaya, Guatemala. She’d eventually like to own her own free- or fair-trade clothing company.

Safia Centner and Selena Zhao
National Merit Scholarships have been offered to Safia Centner and Selena Zhao, who are seniors at Trinity Preparatory School. Specifically, Centner was offered the National Merit University of Central Florida scholarship, and Zhao won the National Siemens Foundation Scholarship.

Timber Creek High School Robotics Team
At the 2017 VEX Robotics World Championship, the Timber Creek High School (TCHS) Robotics Team competed against 550 teams from all over the world. Of the 94 teams in their division, the TCHS squad placed 11th overall. The team is coached by TCHS teachers Alex and Jennifer Kane.

Lake Highland Prep Middle School Robotics Team
Back in February, Lake Highland Preparatory School’s (LHPS’) Middle School Robotics Team won first place in robot performance, with the team advancing to the Central Florida Regional Championship. Additionally, LHPS teacher and team mentor Robert Lee was recognized with the Best Coach Award.

The First Academy 6th Graders
Throughout the 2017 spring semester, 6th-grade students at The First Academy spent time learning about different countries and cultures. They then showcased what they had learned at May’s Missions Fest, in which participating students presented information pertaining to, and wore clothes representing, their selected countries.
