Homemade Soap
Homemade soap can be a luxurious treat for yourself or to give as a gift. Lather up with this fun and functional craft!
Materials
- ½ tsp. body safe fragrance oil, desired scent (we’re using Berry Wine)
- 1 tsp. body safe soap colorant (we’re using Merlot Sparkle Mica)
- ½ tsp. body safe glitter (optional)
- Soap molds, store-bought or household molds (silicone bakeware, small plastic containers, etc.)
- Heat safe container or double boiler
- Plastic wrap
- Rubbing alcohol, in a spray bottle
- Utensils: Knife, spoon, and spatula
Note: Items used for soap making are available at craft stores or through online retailers, such as naturesgardencandles.com or brambleberry.com. Supplies, including simple household molds, should not be used for food preparation.
Directions
- Measure approximately 8 oz. of white melt and pour soap base. Cut the soap into smaller chunks for easier melting.
- Transfer into a glass measuring cup or double boiler. If using a measuring cup, cover with plastic wrap and place in the microwave. This will help keep the soap from drying out. Melt soap in 30-second intervals until fully melted. Be careful not to stir the soap too much because that will create unwanted bubbles.
- If desired: Add a soap colorant, such as Merlot Sparkle Mica, to create a preferred hue. Add glitter, such as iridescent glitter, for sparkle. Reminder: All products must be body safe. Note: If Mica powder clumps, spray a small amount of alcohol into soap mixture to help break up the clumps.
- Add desired fragrance oil, such as Berry Wine. Stir well to fully incorporate color and fragrance.
- The soap is now ready to be molded using small plastic containers or silicone bakeware. Pour soap mixture into the mold; spritz with alcohol to eliminate air pockets. The alcohol will quickly evaporate and not interfere with the soap’s scent.
- Let the soap set in the mold for 2-3 hours. Then, use light pressure to pop out. Use soap immediately, or cover with plastic wrap to avoid any sweat.
