Enriching Lives One Smile at a Time
Orthodontic specialists Dr. William Fravel and Dr. Breck Brewer, the owners of Fravel Brewer Orthodontics, are a community-driven power team that boosts the lives of their patients and community.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Fravel has been operating within the Central Florida area helping residents improve their smiles. In 2018, when Dr. Breck Brewer joined Dr. Fravel, their success escalated. Both doctors focus on more than aligning their patients’ teeth, they foster smiles, encourage self-confidence and offer a strong involvement within the community.
“What we do is such a gift because we help improve people’s self-esteem and give them the ability to feel good about themselves,” says Dr. Brewer. “I think one of the things that led me to orthodontics was serving patients and brightening smiles.”
“I found that with orthodontics you get to see such a change in people’s personality,” adds Dr. Fravel. “A lot of these kids come in and they are afraid to smile, then once we get their teeth straightened all of a sudden, they open up and have greater self-esteem.”
Dr. Fravel, an Orlando resident, has been part of the Central Florida community for quite some time, while Dr. Brewer, a Titusville native, recently moved back after serving for 12 years in the United States Army, separating with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
“We do the same treatments and a lot of the time we go into the room with a new patient to introduce ourselves so they get to know both of us,” Dr. Fravel says. “We let them know that they might see one of us, or the other, but that we have the same treatment plan in mind.”
Not only are Drs. Fravel and Brewer dedicated to their mission as orthodontists, they are very involved within their community, including numerous organizations throughout Central Florida, some relating to orthodontics while others are focused on bettering those around them.
“Smile for a Lifetime is a national organization that Dr. Fravel became involved with in 2012. The organization finds orthodontists that provide orthodontic scholarships, which is essentially free treatment to area teenagers who would benefit from such a program,” Dr. Brewer says. “Candidates have to show that they are in need of care, but may not have the income to cover the cost, they must exhibit adequate grades, and participate in community service in return for free treatment. To date we’ve been able to treat 34 area kids.”
“A lot of these kids are A-plus students but there is something holding them back and it’s their smile,” Dr. Fravel says. “They really change once it is fixed.”
Drs. Fravel and Brewer partner with 12 local schools within the area where they donate their time through demonstrations, monetary funds and the Tooth Fairy program, which teaches dental education.
“We also have schools come to us throughout the year as part of their field trips—it’s called Field Trips for your Future. We have schools from our area bring their first graders to our office. We set up several stations around the office for the children to perform science labs,” says Dr. Brewer. “We are also currently working with Second Harvest Food Bank, which distributes donated food to several locations across Central Florida.” and also the Ocoee Christian Service Center.”
In their own office, Drs. Fravel and Brewer teach their patients how to appreciate others and find ways to give back through their Treats for Troops program. It started with the idea to bring Halloween to those serving overseas and thanks to Dr. Brewer’s involvement in the Army, the office sent nearly 700 pounds of candy to soldiers in Iraq last year. They are encouraging their patients to not only give back, but to learn to be better people and to have a lasting kindness toward others.
As soon as you walk into their office, there is a feeling of comfort. Their reception features a charging station, a selfie station and signs that congratulate the end of a patient’s treatment. Both doctors work well together to make their patients feel welcome and to have an impact on not only their smile but their lives.
“Dr. Fravel and I have been able to take a very established and well thought of practice and come together to continue that excellent commitment to our patients,” says Dr. Brewer. “I’m so proud of our talented team.”
