Getting Personal

iHeartRadio host Jana Sutter on getting bit by the radio bug, being on the move and how she likes to start each day.

1. My interest in radio began when I was about to graduate from the University of North Carolina and I found myself winning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to see Oasis Unplugged in London. My favorite band and my first trip overseas. It was an MTV contest through a local radio station. I was able to go in and talk on the morning show, report while I was there and come back in afterwards for a recap. To be honest, I loved being at the station. Seeing all the equipment and how it all worked together—I was hooked! I quickly got an internship after that, and the rest is history.

2. The biggest misconception people have about my job is that it’s just hanging out in the studio listening to music. While some radio hosts hang in the studio for their four- or five-hour shift, my workday is a bit different. I average four to five shows each weekday. I host two daily shows here in Orlando, but I do radio shows in other cities like Las Vegas as well. I also host a nationally syndicated show for iHeartRadio that airs in 28 other markets. Furthermore, I am the assistant program director and music director for both XL106.7 and Magic 107.7. Lots of meetings and behind the scenes work go into both of those positions. So, no—I’m not just hanging out in the studio listening to music. I’m always in motion.

3. I’m originally from Birmingham, Alabama. Although I grew up in Richmond, Virginia; Atlanta; and Charlotte, North Carolina, as well. Then I moved to many markets during my early years in radio including Charleston, South Carolina; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Kansas City, Missouri, just to name a few. I came to Orlando to be the afternoon drive host on XL106.7. I figured it would be a year or two. But here I am 15 years later and still loving what I do!

4. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a sports medicine doctor. I wanted to rebuild knees and get people moving again. I even went to college for it. Ultimately, I was bit by the radio bug, but if anyone blows an ACL at a station event, I’m your girl.

5. In college, I competed in intramural water skiing. Although I competed in ski jumping and trick skiing, slalom skiing was always my favorite. It was a great way to spend any free time and stay in shape. Oddly enough, I have barely skied since moving to Orlando. Seeing a gator in the water by the boat dock is a bit of a deterrent.

6. I’m lucky enough to have seen just about every music act on my list of favorites, but one band that I wish I could have seen is Led Zeppelin. Their music is unlike anything else and to see that live would have been so cool.

7. I am a college football girl. I was raised on Alabama football. Roll Tide! But honestly, watching all these SEC teams is so exciting. Is there anything better than college football on TV with friends and family around cheering on their teams?

8. I’m a mother to an amazing 8-year-old girl. She keeps me on my toes. Lots of snuggles, questions, energy and “mini-me” moments. Being her mom is a gift.

9. I like to start my day by waking up early to have some me time. I’ll grab a workout at home and then prioritize my to-do list for the day over a cup of coffee. After that I wake up my daughter for some silly morning fun. Once I drop her at school, it’s nonstop until the evening.

10. A hidden talent I have is fire blowing. I picked up this unusual party trick working in St. Louis. I’m talking Tiki torch, shooting flames, fire blowing.
