New Year’s Resolutions for Kids

Half of Americans set New Year’s Resolutions, but only 8% actually succeed in keeping them according to a study reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychology. The American Academy of Pediatrics says parents can help children set age-appropriate resolutions and offer positive enforcement to help them succeed.

Here are some suggestions:

Preschoolers

  • I will pick up my toys and put them where they belong.
  • I will brush my teeth twice a day, and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating.
  • I won’t tease the pets and will avoid being bitten by keeping my fingers and face away from their mouths.
  • I will talk with my parent or trusted adult when I need help or am scared.

Kids & Tweens

  • I will drink reduced-fat milk and water every day, and drink soda/fruit drinks only at special times.
  • I will wear sunscreen (hat, sunglasses) before I go outdoors, and try to stay in the shade, especially when playing sports.
  • I will try to find a sport/activity that I like and do it at least three times a week!
  • I will always wear a helmet when riding a bike, and a seatbelt in a car.
  • I’ll be friendlier to kids who need pals and reach out to shy or new students.
  • I’ll never give out private information (such as my name, address, photo, etc.) on the Internet.
  • I will talk with my parent or trusted adult when I have a problem or feel stressed.

Teens

  • I will take care of my body through physical activity and eating the right types/amounts of foods.
  • I will choose non-violent television shows & video games and spend (at most) 1-2 hours each day on these activities.
  • I will help my community, such as by volunteering my time to help others, participate with community groups, etc.
  • When I feel angry or overwhelmed, I will take a break and find ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal, or talking with a parent or friend.
  • When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk about my choices with an adult whom I can trust.
  • When I notice my friends are struggling or making risky choices, I will talk with a trusted adult and attempt to find a way to help them.
  • I will be careful about whom I choose to date and always treat that person with respect, without forcing him/her to do anything, and expect to be treated the same way in return.
  • I will resist peer pressure to try tobacco, e-cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol.
  • I agree not to use a cellphone or text while driving and to always wear a seatbelt.
